According to ancient Tamil sources Srikalahasti has been known as the ‘Kailas of the South’ for slightly more than two thousand years and the small river on whose banks it sits, the ‘Ganges of the South.’ Kailas is perhaps India’s most revered spiritual symbol. It is the abode of Shiva, from whose head, according to legend, the Ganges is said to flow. Shiva, ‘that which is auspicious at all places, times and in all circumstances’ is a symbol of the Self and the Ganges flowing from his head represents the spiritualized or awakened mind. A mind sourced in Spirit is a river of immeasurable power and life-giving goodness.

Srikalahasti temple, situated 36 km away from Tirupati is famous for its Vayu Lingam (Wind Lingam), one of the Panchabhoota Sthalams, representing wind. The temple is also regarded as Rahu-Ketu kshetra and Dakshina Kailasam. The inner temple was constructed around 5th century and the outer temple was constructed in the 11th century by the Rajendra Chola I, later Chola kings and the Vijayanagar kings. The temple is famous for its architecture, which symbolizes the connection between art and spirituality, and for its bronze statue of Natraja, which depicts Shiva dancing in a circle of fire, with one foot on a dwarf demon and the other lifted in grace. The statue is a masterpiece of Indian art and expresses the essence of Hindu philosophy and cosmology.

  • Thank you! I've get a feeling of cleansing and rebooting. Time flies by absolutely imperceptibly. It seems that you arrived a couple of days ago and now you are already sitting on the plane home, and in your thoughts the phrase: "I will definitely return." All 3 of my trips ended with it!

  • Traveling to India is always a challenge, always an experience of accepting situations, and always a feeling that I will be back again. I went on a yoga trip to expand my horizons, my development in yoga practices, in order to see new places and people.
